1909
Hardy Amies was born Edwin Amies on July 17th, in Maida Vale; he changed his name to Hardy Amies in 1929, Hardy being his Mother’s maiden name.
1937
Hardy Amies was Design Director of Lachasse. It was Coronation year and many Americans were in town. Stars like Ginger Rogers, Mildred Shay and Eleanor Boardman were friends of Virginia Cherrill and ex-husband Cary Grant, and went to visit Hardy.
1943
Amies saw active service during WWII, joining the Belgian section of the SOE as the Second-in-Command to Lt-Col Claude Knight, whom he later succeeded in command.
1945
Hardy Amies was formed with investor Countess of Jersey - formerly film star Virginia Cherrill; on Monday, November 12th, Hardy Amies moved into No. 14 Savile Row, officially opening in January 1946.
1950
On July 3rd, HRH Princess Elizabeth visited No. 14 for the first time, with HRH Princess Margaret.
1955
Hardy Amies started his long association with HM Queen Elizabeth II, from her accession to the throne until his retirement, in 1989.
1961
Hardy Amies started to design menswear.
1964
Hardy Amies wrote 'The ABC of Men's Fashion', the definitive alphabetical guide for men's style and etiquette. Over the coming years in was published again, and again, and again...
1966
The English football team won the World Cup. Off the pitch, they were all kitted out in Hardy Amies.
1968
Hardy designed the entire wardrobe for director Stanley Kubrick's '2001: A Space Odyssey'.
1970s
Hardy designed home ware, creating bespoke kitchens, crockery and entire bedroom suites - from bedspreads to breakfast trays. He also designed wallpaper prints for Crown.
1977
Hardy created his 'crowning glory' for HM the Queen: the coral pink dress and jacket for the Silver Jubilee.
1989
In recognition of his long service as the Queen's dressmaker, Hardy Amies was made a Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order, becoming Sir Hardy Amies.
2003
On March 5th, Sir Hardy Amies died, at 2:30pm at his country house in Langford, Oxfordshire - aged 93.
