Trends come and go but style is timeless

Megha Bahuguna, a civil engineer by profession, is a fashion and beauty enthusiast at heart. Through her YouTube channel, Perkymegs, she highlights stylish Indian fashion, along with beauty and makeup content. Bahuguna believes that hard work, dedication, and a positive mindset are the keys to success. She emphasises the importance of both logical thinking and following one’s heart in order to create a magical life. Speaking to Fibre2Fashion, Bahuguna says that by wholeheartedly pursuing one’s passions, dreams can indeed become a reality.

Fibre2Fashion: Can you tell us a bit about yourself and how you started out as an influencer on Instagram and YouTube?

Megha Bahuguna:

I have a B.Tech degree in civil engineering from NIT Jaipur and have worked in the corporate sector for eight years. But my passion has always been fashion and creative things. In 2016, I started my first YouTube channel Perkymegs to create fashion and beauty content as a hobby to escape the boredom of my technical job. I enjoyed it so much that in 2017 I left my technical high-paying job to become a full-time content creator. Also, I started my second channel called Perkymegs Hindi which picked up instantly and we crossed 1 million subscribers in 2019. There has been no looking back ever since.

 

F2F: What inspired you to create content in the fashion and beauty niche?

MB:

I was always passionate about fashion. I had learnt makeup completely through YouTube and wanted to share my knowledge of fashion and beauty with like-minded people. Also, doing so gave me creative satisfaction and the much-needed happiness which was missing in my technical job.

F2F: What steps have you taken to differentiate yourself from other influencers in the fashion and beauty space?

MB:

I have always created content that is relatable and that is what strikes a chord with my followers. I create simple practical everyday looks which people love.

F2F: How has your content evolved over time, and what factors influenced those changes?

MB:

The production value has changed completely today. From uploading videos that looked simple to now creating high production content—it’s important to meet the demands of present times. Having said that, the core value of the content is still the same, which is relatable high-value content. After becoming a mother, I have now expanded my content from fashion and beauty to motherhood as well as travel.

F2F: Are there any particular milestones or turning points in your career that have significantly impacted the direction of your content?

MB:

The biggest turning point in my career has been starting my second YouTube channel Perkymegs Hindi in 2017. People requested me to make my content in Hindi as many of them did not understand English. So after thinking about it a lot, I started a new Hindi Channel. I had no idea that the channel would grow so fast that before we even realised, we crossed 1 million subscribers in 2019. I started working on big brand deals and it gave me the professional boost that I needed.

F2F: Have you collaborated with brands or other influencers? If so, what criteria do you use to choose the right collaborations?

MB:

I work with brands that go with our ideology. I always recommend products to my audience that I personally like and have tried and tested and share my honest reviews on them. I collaborate with only those brands that give me the creative freedom to create content.

F2F: What are some of the challenges you have faced as an influencer, and how have you overcome them?

MB:

The analytics are always changing for all social media platforms which is very tricky for creators. Also, new features come every three months and we have to update our content accordingly. For example, reels and shorts have pushed creators to create content daily which is quite exhausting, to be honest. But the passion for my job keeps me going and the love of my followers motivates me to create good content every day.

F2F: How would you describe your personal style, and what are your go-to fashion essentials?

MB:

My personal style is very relaxed. It is a mix of classic styles and seasonal fashion. My go-to fashion essentials are basic tees, a pair of blue jeans, a white shirt, trousers, and a white kurti.

F2F: How have you observed fashion trends changing over the years? What do you think has influenced these shifts?

MB:

Earlier fashion in India for common people was limited to Bollywood fashion, but now we are updated about all international fashion trends, thanks to the internet. Indian influencers are attending international fashion weeks which is making Indian audiences aware of all the current fashion trends. This, in turn, is influencing brands to create similar lines of clothes for people. We are no more lagging behind when it comes to the latest fashion trends.

F2F: Can you share any fashion or style tips for your followers?

MB:

Create your own style which reflects your personality. Wear something in which you feel comfortable and confident. Trends come and go but style is timeless.

F2F: What advice would you give to someone who wants to become an influencer on Instagram or YouTube?

MB:

Start creating content with whatever resources you have and stop overthinking. Hard work and consistency are everything in this field.

F2F: Are there any lessons you have learned along your journey that you would like to share?

MB:

Spending too much time on creating content for social media can be exhausting, so it is important to have a work-life balance. Also, there is no alternative to hard work and that is what helps in overcoming all hurdles. There are lots of ups and downs in this profession, so keeping a calm mind is important.
