My style is futuristic minimal

Anna Yang is founder of brand Annakiki that explores a surrealist fantasy. Breaking down technology’s coldness, it embraces a bold and futuristic design language, defined by novel techniques and unique details. In an interview with Fibre2Fashion, Yang reveals about her inspiration behind her futuristic collection and shares some style tips.

Fibre2Fashion : How would you describe your personal style?

Anna Yang:

My style is futuristic minimal, I prefer black and white as colours. I like to be comfy but at the same time, as you can see in Annakiki creations, I want to add some details that are unusual—kind of, out of this world.

Fibre2Fashion : Where do you find your inspiration for such asymmetric tailoring, creative deconstruction, sculptural shapes, and techno craft collection?

Anna Yang:

For the new FW 22-23 collection, I have been inspired by the expression of Cyborg, after I watched the science fiction movie Alita – specifically the female protagonist who has a mechanical body.

Cyborg presents the idea of the human and machine symbiosis, however there is a more profound meaning, that’s linked to the idea of having a longer continuity of life. It’s about evolution, not regeneration. This makes us able to enhance living organisms through artificial intelligence technology, as the term suggests. For this reason, the next season’s collection will continue with our iconic cross metal meteor and classic 3D wave sleeve shape, super-long silhouette to blur gender and body curves, stripping people of their traditional sexuality and returning them to their essence.

Fibre2Fashion : Given that you are the first fashion designer to present an AI-powered collection, could you please explain why you chose the concept?

Anna Yang:

I believe that while humans are dependent on powerful technology, they are also worried about the future of technology backfiring on them. The idea is to be not anti-human, but something that can enhance the senses through mechanical parts. It means more sense of our living space so as to better protect and repair the natural environment and living space that has been greatly damaged by humans.

Fibre2Fashion : What fabrics and materials do you use for such a futuristic collection?

Anna Yang:

The scientific and technological visual experience is brought to life through the use of light, flowing and sparkling fabrics like metallic light satin, as well as the integration of metal hardware accessories.

The collection still integrates the iconic 3D stereoscopic tailoring silhouette. The sleeves are designed with artistic, retro and geometrical lines to create a sense of movement that evokes the idea of an alien visitor that could also be a more evolved human from the future.

Fibre2Fashion : How do you include sustainability in your fashion creations?

Anna Yang:

I believe that digital fashion is one of the innovations to solve the ecological crisis and actually doesn’t create waste. As fashion trends move so fast, people’s desire for fashion consumption becomes strong, and digital fashion can satisfy this desire and be environmentally friendly. For example, digital fashion design is gender neutral and size inclusive. In the meta universe, people can show off their new clothes without actually wearing, storing or repairing them. Recently, Annakiki launched the 2022AW NFT Virtual Clothing collection. I hope to continue the innovative design concept of digital fashion and address the sustainable development of the fashion industry from a new perspective.

Fibre2Fashion : Which celebrities or well-known figures have appeared in your collection?

Anna Yang:

Thankfully our brand has many fans and some of them are well-known figures. We have artists such as Lady Gaga, Little Mix and Maneskin; models like Gigi Hadid, Lauren Wasser and Larsen Thompson; and the young talents like Willow Smith, Addison Rae and Liza Koshy just to cite a few of them.

Fibre2Fashion : What are the noticeable trends and Pantone colours that can have the highest influence on fashion enthusiasts?

Anna Yang:

Pantone colour of the year is usually based on colours that we see all year around from the trend of the moment. I think the most noticeable trends are the timeless ones like flared trousers or the little black dress; they are easy to wear, and you can’t go wrong wearing them.

Fibre2Fashion : Any style tips that you would like to share to slay in a basic outfit?

Anna Yang:

Nothing is basic, depends on how you’ll style it. So even if you wear a white plain t-shirt with blue jeans, you can slay the look with accessories like a bold bag, colourful shoes or by adding a blazer with 3D details or waved sleeves.
